Welcome to the Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology (BMI) Department
BMI is a research-intensive department with more than one hundred faculty members conducting research in modern biomedical and life sciences. Our mandate is to conduct leading basic and translational research while our approach is to integrate this research with our educational programs to provide unique training opportunities for our undergraduate students, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
While the department is physically located at the Faculty of Medicine in Roger Guindon Hall, members are located across the Ottawa region and, in particular, within our affiliated teaching hospitals, research institutes and government agencies. The BMI core members conduct high-quality, collaborative research in areas of Cancer biology, Structural & Chemical biology, Cell, Genetics & Developmental biology, Brain & Mind, Cardiovascular, Metabolism & Lipid biology, Systems & Computational biology, Viral & Bacterial Pathogenesis and Immunology. Our department offers a vibrant, dynamic and highly interactive research and learning environment for trainees at undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral levels.
A new undergraduate program is now offered, Translational and Molecular Medicine. This program is truly revolutionary in integrating theoretical and practical courses to offer students the most advanced and innovative learning experience in Canada.
Two graduate programs, Biochemistry (BCH) and Microbiology and Immunology (MIC), are offered, leading to the degrees of Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). A specialization in Human and Molecular Genetics is also offered in collaboration with other graduate programs in the Faculty of Medicine. MSc students can also complete a specialization in Bioinformatics through a multidisciplinary collaborative program.
