Dr. Elana Christine Fric-Shamji was a respected family physician, professor, mentor and a loving mother of three young children. Elana received her medical education here at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, where she graduated with a medical degree (MD) in 2003 and also completed her family medicine residency in 2006.

She furthered her education with a Master’s degree in public and health policy from Duke University and later became a member of the Ontario Medical Association (OMA). At the OMA, she held an esteemed position on the Health Policy Committee and was instrumental in many efforts to improve our health care system.

Elana was especially passionate about global health and equitable care for vulnerable populations, including women and refugees. She will be honoured and remembered as a gifted doctor, supportive colleague and inspiring mentor.

Those who know her personally will forever cherish her memory as a trusted friend, an enthusiastic runner, and a deeply caring mother who was devoted to her three beautiful children.

Forever in our hearts.
