Dr. Jacques Bradwejn, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dr. Guoqiang Chen, Chancellor of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM), on October 19, 2013 in Shanghai. The event was attended by the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, as well as Jim Watson, mayor of Ottawa, Alain Beaudet, President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Gilles Patry, President of the Canada Foundation for Innovation. University representatives included Dr. Mona Nemer, Vice-President, Research and Dr. Melissa Forgie, Vice-Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education.

The agreement commits to a $2M joint fund for research and medical education over five years. In addition, it stipulates that the Faculty, jointly with SJTUSM, establishes the Shanghai Ottawa Joint Medical School in the Renji Hospital of Shanghai to train students in the English Medical Education Program at the SJTUSM. Officials from uOttawa visited the hospital and the university subsequent to the signing event and a plan for the new school was jointly drafted before our return to Canada.

This new venture builds on the Faculty’s current relationship with the SJTUSM and provides both universities and their respective affiliated hospitals unique opportunities in education and research for many years to come.
