Biography

Dr. Caughey is an Obstetrician Gynecologist in the Division of General Obstetrics & Gynecology. She has been on staff at The Ottawa Hospital since its amalgamation in 1999 and was previously in practice at the Riverside Hospital of Ottawa since 1993.

After obtaining her medical degree at Queens University in 1986, Dr. Caughey undertook residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1991. During her residency, she was awarded the Resident Memorial Teaching Award in 1990 for undergraduate clinical teaching. She undertook an additional year of postgraduate training in 1992 in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Ottawa. She became a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1995.

She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa. She is involved with undergraduate and resident clinical teaching in the office and hospital. She has a private office practice and is based at the General and Riverside Campuses for hospital care. Her office practice comprises general obstetrics gynecology, colposcopy and ultrasound.

In June 2002, she was awarded a Millennium Fellowship from the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC) to study obstetrical risk identification and risk management at the Ottawa Hospital. During this time, she developed an interest in patient safety issues, resulting in her participation in The Ottawa Hospital Patient Safety Study. She is a member of the corporate Ottawa Hospital Patient Safety Committee and the Patient Safety and Risk Management Committee.

Most recently, she has chaired the MORE OB program at The Ottawa Hospital, an obstetrical risk identification and patient safety initiative of the SOGC. She is also a member of the Patient Safety Curriculum Development Committee of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.

A current research interest is the development of a communication program for adverse obstetrical events. She and her co-investigator, Dr. Kerri Ritchie, Psychologist, have been awarded $25000 from the TOHAMO Academic Enhancement Fund.

Recent professional development activities have included her participation in the Ottawa Academic Health Sciences Leadership Program and in the SOGC Clinical Practice Guidelines Writing Workshop.

She is active in many hospital committees and holds membership in many professional societies. She has served as an executive member of the Ontario Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
