The Department of Pediatrics is affiliated with the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), the CHEO Research Institute and the University of Ottawa.
CHEO is a pediatric health and research center that provides outstanding family-centered patient care and pioneering breakthrough research. CHEO is one of only a few stand-alone pediatric hospitals in Canada, and has more than 6,600 admissions, 7,700 surgeries and 171,000 clinic visits each year. It also has one of the busiest pediatric emergency rooms in the country, treating more than 74,000 patients a year. The CHEO Research Institute is the research arm of CHEO that works to create new knowledge and evidence to help provide the world-class care that CHEO is known for.
The major focus of the Department of Pediatrics is to deliver exemplary care to the population of children and youth whom we serve at CHEO and in the community. We do so through the enormous commitment of all of our faculty members whether it be in the front line of acute or chronic care in our emergency department, our intensive care units (NICU and PICU), on the inpatient wards, in the ambulatory setting or in the community.
In addition to a very strong commitment to our clinical mission, our department continues to make outstanding academic contributions. We place a very high value on teaching and make significant contributions at all levels. We contribute close to 60,000 trainee days over the course of the academic year (undergraduate and postgraduate) and make enormous contributions to the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine Undergraduate Curriculum. Our department is also highly successful in the acquisition of research funding, with many successful grant applications, and our clinician-investigators and scientists continue to be leaders in a wide array of areas. This has led to many high impact publications, and to important leadership nationally and internationally. Also, and most importantly, it has led to a significant impact in patient care.
We optimize the health of children and youth in the communities we serve through exemplary clinical care, research, education, and advocacy.
Excellence in patient care, fostering and integrating discovery, scholarship, and learning.
