Every year, UGME students apply for positions matching their abilities and career aspirations. After years of contemplating, completing over 5,000 objectives, succeeding at multiple examinations, and participating in many hours of electives, they are ready for their next challenge – residency!
It all begins with the match process, which has UGME students travelling across Canada to interview with Program Directors and ranking their choices in the tool managed by Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS). During this process, Program Directors and their selection committees review students’ application files and interview results to determine their rank order list (ROL). The PGME office then reviews each file to ensure compliance to all requirements and approves ROLs. CaRMS then completes the match process, and releases results. Match day was on March 1, 2017.
This year, 3305 residency spots were available within Canada, 197 of which are offered by PGME here at uOttawa. We matched 172 in the first iteration, and expect all spots to be filled after the 2nd iteration occurring April 12, 2017.
- 166 uOttawa medical students were involved in the match
- 46 uOttawa medical students matched to uOttawa PGME programs
- uOttawa achieved a match rate of 91.4%
- 93.5% of uOttawa medical students match rate in Canada
PGME is very excited to welcome all residents into our programs, whose residency experience will begin with an orientation session scheduled to take place on June 30, 2017 here at RGN. We wish all medical students the very best in their career choices, and look forward to working with our new trainees on July 1.
