Pre-Clerkship

Year 1 and Year 2 Electives

You are strongly encouraged to do electives during your 1st and 2nd years. It is expected that an elective done during pre-clerkship will be observational. However, hands-on experiences are permitted under supervision and approval of your preceptor.

Doing electives is a way for you to be exposed to the different specialties and sub-specialties of Medicine. A way to get familiarized with hospital and clinical settings. A way to help you better prepare for choosing your residency and a way to better know who you are.

Use your imagination when setting up electives: medical education, history of medicine, community work, basic science, international health and occupational health are all examples of legitimate ideas.

We recommend that you complete a minimum of five 10-hour electives in different specialties per year.
