A Message from the Chair
« Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant. »
Robert Louis Stevenson
People who inspire us often significantly influence our choice of career. As a junior doctor, I was fortunate to work with several great physicians: anesthesiologists who were often called to the most severely ill patients or those with untreatable pain, who then treated those patients with care, compassion and confidence. Those inspirational clinicians brought me into the specialty of anesthesiology, one of the truly holistic medical specialties with our involvement across perioperative and pain medicine. In anesthesiology, we have a strong tradition of developing great physicians. Some of the greatest physicians in the last 200 years were also anesthesiologists: individuals such as John Snow, Virginia Apgar, Harold Griffith and John Bonica were all anesthesiologists who changed medicine with their innovation and leadership.
At the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, we strive to continue this tradition of excellence. Providing each patient with the highest quality care in anesthesiology, perioperative medicine and pain medicine is central to our mission. This motivation drives our passion for training the next generation of great physicians and can be seen by our involvement in undergraduate education and by our innovative graduate programs. The competence by design residency program under development at the University of Ottawa is a first in anesthesiology and will influence the way we train future anesthesiologists for generations. Lead by our faculty of clinicians and scientists, we are committed to finding the best ways to treat patients in the perioperative period and to treat those with severe pain whether that be after surgery, chronic or cancer pain.
Anesthesiology is the practice of medicine. Each day, we work to improve the way we care for patients and want to attract to our specialty those individuals whose passion is to make a difference to patient care through great education and research. Our faculty and colleagues welcome you to visit us.
