The University of Ottawa Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine offers a one or two year Fellowship in Simulation and Medical Education in partnership with the University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre (uOSSC) and the Department of Innovation in Medical Education (DIME).
Our Simulation Faculty
Left to right: Dr. Meghan Andrews, Dr. Joanne Bleakley (fellow), Dr. Michelle Chiu, Dr. Heather O'Reilly, Dr. Simone Crooks, Dr. Daniel Power
Our group is composed of 9 instructors with extensive experience in teaching and research in simulation / medical education. We have been trained in simulation-based education in various parts of the world (Australia, UK, France and Canada). Our team has recognized expertise in teaching using simulation and a track record in education research. We are actively involved in international academic collaboration and in presenting international simulation-based workshops.
The University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre
We are fortunate to be operating out of the uOSSC, the largest simulation center in Canada which provides unique educational opportunities to our Fellows. Our 20,000 ft2 facility offers 4 high-fidelity simulation rooms integrated with a procedural / surgical skills laboratory and conference facilities. We work in collaboration with the Departments of Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics / Gynecology, Surgery and Critical Care, all of whom have active simulation programs at the uOSSC.
Former Fellows graduating from our Fellowship program have established or joined Simulation Programs in Winnipeg, Kingston and the Canadian Armed Forces in Canada, and internationally, Saudi Arabia, Austria, the United Kingdom and China.
The Goals of the Fellowship
- To provide intensive research and instructor training in simulation / medical education
- To provide training in curricula development, and mentorship in teaching, learning and research in health professions education.
- To prepare Clinician Educators for a career in academic medicine.
