Through the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Ottawa has become the first Canadian university to endorse the Brocher Declaration, a new set of principles intended to guide policy on short-term global health work, which too often fails to consider the needs of a host community and occasionally causes more harm than good.
Planned caesarean births safe for low-risk pregnancies
Using data from more than 400,000 low-risk pregnancies, Dr. Darine El-Chaâr and co-authors found a lower risk of adverse delivery outcomes compared with planned vaginal deliveries. The study is published in CMAJ.
ICU admission linked to higher rate of future suicide compared with other hospitalizations
According to the first study of its kind published in the medical journal The BMJ, the highest rates of suicide were seen in younger patients (ages 18-34), those with pre-existing diagnoses of depression, anxiety or PTSD, and those who received invasive procedures.
