Biography

Dr. Eric Young is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health (SEPH) in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. 

For the first half of his career he was a general practitioner in Surrey, BC where he served on several hospital committees as well as on the BC Medical Association’s (now the Doctors of BC) Environmental Health Committee.   After completing a Master's degree (MHSc) in Community Health and Epidemiology and medical specialization in Public Health and Preventive Medicine as well as a Certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP) in the mid 1990s he served as the Associate Medical Officer of Health in Scarborough.  Subsequently, he was the Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer for Saskatchewan and then Deputy Provincial Health Officer of British Columbia.

He has served on a wide variety of provincial and national committees. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Population and Public Health in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia.

His awards include the Public Health and Preventive Medicine Residents’ Appreciation Award 2014 - University of British Columbia; BC Provincial Health Officer award for excellence in Public Health 2014; Health Officers’ Council of British Columbia’s George Elliott Award for Excellence in Public Health (for life-time achievement in public health) 2014; and Canadian Public Health Association Award – Honorary Lifetime Membership - for distinguished service in the field of public health knowledge and practice 2015.
