Academic and Leadership Support Fund
The Department of Family Medicine Academic and Leadership Support Fund has been set up as a 5 year pilot program. A total of $250,000 has been set aside for this pilot ($50,000 per year for five years). The fund is intended to recognize and support physicians who are involved in the training of our Family Medicine residents and medical students by providing them with an opportunity to further their continued education and/or enhance their leadership skills in as much as it relates to their academic role within the Department.
Specifically, this newly created fund will allow the Department to support faculty seeking postgraduate educational degrees (e.g. Master of Education) or leadership courses that will enrich our academic mission, and allow for more effective succession planning.
To be eligible for either fund, applicants must be a member of the Department of Family Medicine with an academic appointment for at least two years.
Apply for Tuition/Education Support
This portion of the fund focusses exclusively on supporting Faculty interested in the pursuit of higher learning education in exchange for a return of service.
- Applicant must clearly demonstrate, in writing, the return on investment for the DFM. A minimum faculty development presentation upon successful completion of the program is required.
- An application form must be completed.
- Applicants may be funded up to $10,000 annually for a maximum of 2 years or for a total maximum contribution of $20,000 per applicant if program is spread over a longer period of time.
- After discussion with the Chair on acceptable program milestones, applicant’s will remain with the DFM for 1-2 years at the same level of commitment based on their current role.
- A faculty development presentation to peers upon successful completion of the program Is required.
- An assessment rubric has been developed to help the DTPC evaluate applications.
- The program must, upon evaluation, be accepted by the Chair before the request can be presented to the DTPC for approval.
- Exceptions may be considered at the discretion of the Departmental Teaching Personnel Committee (DTPC).
- Proof of successful completion of the program in the form of a certificate or letter, along with receipt from the applicable educational institution is required by Finance prior to releasing funds.
Apply for Leadership Training Support
This portion of the fund supports Faculty members interested in the acquisition of leadership skills through training.
- Funds used to cover leadership training fees will be cost shared between the Department and the successful candidate (70% paid by DFM; 30% paid by nominee). DFM's maximum fund contribution is $2,000 per applicant.
- An application form must be completed.
- Applicants must meet with the Chair in advance of DTPC consideration.
- Applicants can apply every 3 years.
- An assessment rubric has been developed to help the DTPC evaluate applications.
- Confirmation and registration and receipt will be required by Finance prior to releasing the funds.
Apply for Scholarly Presentation Support
This portion of the fund supports and encourages Faculty members in presenting at a provincial, national or international educational conference. It will promote new authors in their interest in doing research and disseminating their results.
- Applicants may be eligible for up to a maximum of $500 in financial support towards registration fees for one (1) presenter per topic.
- An application form must be completed.
- Support may be granted for up to 2 educational meetings or conferences for the same applicant.
- Exceptions may be considered at the discretion of the Committee (DTPC).
- Confirmation of registration and receipt will be required by Finance prior to releasing the funds.

Please note that all applications received by the deadlines listed above will be reviewed by the DFM's Departmental Teaching Personnel Committee at their next meeting.
