With increasing wait times in North America, access to specialist care is jeopardizing patients’ mental and physical health, as well as impacting patient and provider satisfaction. When Dr. Clare Liddy (pictured) shared with Dr. Erin Keely that a patient of hers had to wait nine months for an appointment with a specialist, the two doctors agreed this was way too long.
They realized they could improve access for patients by simply making it easier for family doctors and specialists to communicate. Many technological solutions (ex. eConsults and eReferrals) have been proposed, researched and implemented in order to address the issue of excessive wait times.
Now, the Champlain BASE™ (Building Access to Specialists through eConsultation) eConsult service is a secure online platform connecting primary care providers and specialists. More specifically, the service:
- Offers patients more coordinated care
- Was jointly developed by primary care providers and specialists
- Supports ongoing quality improvement through continuous service evaluation and data analysis
“The patient is very appreciative of the rapid response, clarification of his concerns, and suggestions for treatment.”
- Requesting Provider, Champlain LHIN
“It was becoming increasingly common that I’d do a referral for patients and they would be waiting months and months to get that appointment with the specialist.”
- Dr. Clare Liddy, MD, MSc, FCFP
Ultimately, the implementation of the Champlain BASE™ eConsult service in our Local Health Integration Network has been transformational for both patients and providers – with over 11,000 eConsults made to date.
