Dr. Jak Nehme

2019 Undergraduate Preceptor of the Year

Congratulations to Dr. Jak Nehme, the DFM's Undergraduate Preceptor of the Year (2019)! While the pandemic may have delayed the delivery of his award, it is a pleasure to recognize Dr. Nehme for his amazing work as a family medicine teacher. Congratulations!

Meeting with UG FM leaders

We recently had our virtual meeting with undergraduate family medicine leaders, where many interesting ideas regarding how to manage COVID and facilitate learning for our medical students were shared. It was wonderful to brainstorm with family physicians from across the country and hear feedback from students as well.

Student-Senior Isolation Prevention Partnership (SSIPP)

A group of our medical students is volunteering with isolated seniors in the community. The group is called the Student-Senior Isolation Prevention Partnership (SSIPP) and is looking for seniors who would be interested in being paired with a student for regular telephone conversations. If you know possible interested seniors, please contact the group by e-mail at ssipp.ottawa@gmail.com.

Community Service for Medical Students

Our first-year medical students must complete 30 volunteer hours of community service learning. They are typically paired with various organizations or programs in the community that could benefit different patient populations. We are currently looking for opportunities for our students. If you would be interested in getting additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Postgraduate Program

CaRMS 2021

Drs. Rangwala and Seale held our first CaRMS candidate meet and greet on the evening of November 3, 2020. We were so happy to connect with 100 candidates in preparation for our first virtual CaRMS event.

Did you know that CaRMS 2022 will also be virtual? With that in mind, we’d love to brainstorm our virtual approach with you to ensure a successful CaRMS event. If you’d like to participate in the working group, please contact Kim Rozon. We will need support from faculty, residents, and staff to ensure another successful match!

Change in CFPC Exam Dates

Please note that CFPC exam dates have been changed to April 21-25 from April 14-18. Residents should work directly with their unit coordinators if this impact scheduling or academic day.

Kim Rozon - FMNEA Award of Excellence nominee

On November 2-3, FMF held its annual conference for program administrators across the country. It was an excellent opportunity for our administrators to connect (virtually) with others that perform similar functions across a variety of Family Medicine programs. Congratulations to our very own Education manager, Kim Rozon, who was acknowledged as a nominee for the 2020 Family Medicine National Education Administrators (FMNEA) Award of Excellence at this conference. Her hard work and dedication to the program never goes unnoticed!

The DFM Departmental Assembly

The future direction of the DFM - Vision Beyond 2020: Glancing back, looking forward

The DFM Departmental Assembly on Friday, December 4 from 9:00am to 4:00pm is a place for information sharing, discussion of the DFM’s strategic direction, and an opportunity for all DFM members to provide input.

Your role is critical - please participate and ensure your voice is heard.

This full-day event will focus on our new Strategic Plan and will include a "State of the Department" address, break-out discussions, recognition of our successes, and a keynote presentation from Dr. Sarah Funnell: "Anti-Racism in the Time of Covid." View the draft agenda.

We will follow up with all registrants with details on lunch. We are also looking into setting up a few local "hubs" for any interested members to get together safely in person (please indicate your interest when registering). More details to follow!

We look forward to seeing you online for this important, interesting, and exciting event! Questions? Contact facdevdfm@uottawa.ca or 613-899-2576.
