DFM Awards and Recognition
The Department of Family Medicine is proud to recognize the achievements of our faculty members and administrative support staff. These awards will be granted annually to nominees who have earned distinction in their work at the department. We encourage you to nominate your fellow colleagues, and help celebrate the accomplishments of our members.

Clinical Preceptor Award
Description
The Department of Family Medicine’s Clinical Preceptor Award presented annually to a member of the teaching staff who has demonstrated outstanding performance in their teaching, in particular in the development of innovative teaching material and methods, courses, and programs of study, and for their interpersonal skills.
Eligibility
All Faculty with a full-time or part-time Faculty position in the Department of Family Medicine are eligible. This award can be granted at any point in a career and can be won by an individual on more than one occasion.
Nomination process
Candidates for the Family Medicine’s Clinical Preceptor Award may be nominated by any uOttawa Faculty member, supervisor or colleague and brought forward to the Departmental Advisory Committee (DAC) If no candidates are submitted, the Chair or members of the DAC can nominate.

Selection Criteria
The selection criteria will be outstanding teaching; not to be narrowly defined and not limited to classroom teaching. Contributions to all aspects of teaching will be considered. The following list, which is not intended to be exhaustive, is considered typical:
- Explicitly embodies the roles, attitudes, and competencies of a family physician in clinical work
- Demonstrates a commitment to excellence in teaching and education of learners in their unit
- Promotes and stimulates clinical reasoning and problem solving
- Gives timely, learner-centred, and constructive feedback
- Excellent course evaluations by residents and students

The DAC is composed of the chair of the Department of Family Medicine and unit and program directors from each of the teaching site.
Award
At the Annual Faculty Retreat, the recipient will be presented with a commemorative plaque.
Educational Leadership and Teaching Award
Description
The Department of Family Medicine’s Educational Leadership and Teaching Award presented annually to a member of the teaching staff who has demonstrated outstanding performance in their teaching outside of the clinical unit. This could be small- or large-group teaching sessions. Particular focus will be on the development and implementation of innovative teaching material and methods, courses, and programs of study.

All faculty members with a full-time or part-time Faculty position in the Department of Family Medicine are eligible. This award can be granted at any point in a career and can be won by an individual on more than one occasion.

Candidates for the Educational Leadership and Teaching Outside the Clinical Setting Award of the Year Award may be nominated by a uOttawa Faculty member, supervisor or colleague and brought forward to the Departmental Advisory Committee (DAC) If no candidates are submitted, the Chair or members of the DAC can nominate.

Mentorship Award
Description
The Department of Family Medicine Mentorship Award is presented annually to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in mentorship towards learners and faculty members in the Department of Family Medicine, University of Ottawa. Mentors act as role models and have the potential to shape the learning process and experience.
Eligibility
All faculty members with a full-time or part-time Faculty position in the Department of Family Medicine are eligible. This award can be granted at any point in a career and can be won by an individual on more than one occasion, but not in sequential years.
Nomination process
Candidates may be nominated by a uOttawa faculty member or supervisor, colleague, or learner and brought forward to the Departmental Advisory Committee (DAC) If no candidates are submitted, the Chair or members of the DAC can nominate.
Each application must include the following elements
- A letter of nomination (maximum 2 pages) describing the candidate’s contributions to the mentorship of learners and junior faculty in domains outlined in the selection criteria

Selection Criteria
An exceptional mentor also demonstrates excellence in the following:
- Creating a positive, trusting, supportive, environment and empathic relationship with mentees;
- Showing dedication to mentees and their success, supporting opportunities, collaborations, and connections;
- Embodying the role of competency coach -promoting mentee ownership of lifelong learning and career development, providing guidance and advice, and nurturing dialogue, feedback, and reflection;
- Demonstrating excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- Serving as a role model including in roles outside of medicine;
- Development, implementation and/or leadership in mentorship programs/supports
- Upholding core values of professionalism;
- Demonstrating a positive attitude that inspires and enthuses learners and other faculty.
Selection Process
The DAC is composed of the chair of the Department of Family Medicine and unit and program directors from each of the teaching site as well as other senior leaders in the Department of Family Medicine. The DAC will review nominations, and decide the award recipients based on the selection criteria.
Award
At the Department of Family Medicine Faculty Retreat, the recipient will be presented with a commemorative plaque.
Outstanding Faculty Award
Description
The Faculty of Medicine Outstanding Faculty Award- is presented annually to faculty members in recognition of their academic excellence across the domains of education, scholarship, leadership, and clinical service to support the achievement of the goals of the University, Faculty and Department of Family Medicine.
Eligibility
All faculty members with a full-time or part-time faculty position in the Department of Family Medicine are eligible. This award can be granted at any point in a career and can be won by an individual on more than one occasion, but not in sequential years.
Nominations process
Candidates for the Outstanding Faculty Award must be nominated by uOttawa faculty members, colleagues or by learners in the Faculty of Medicine, and their nomination supported by the candidate’s immediate supervisor. If no candidates are submitted, the Chair, Dean and Vice-Deans will propose nominations.
Each application must include the following elements
- A letter of nomination (maximum 2 pages) describing the candidate’s exceptional contribution to service excellence. The description must objectively portray the nominee’s accomplishments during the year or ongoing service excellence over multiple years.
- Nominee's CV (Optional)
- Endorsement letter from the candidate’s supervisor, if they are not the nominator

Selection criteria: The candidate stands out among their peers and makes an exceptional contribution to fulfilling the University’s vision of service excellence by:

Scholarly Achievement of the Year

The Department of Family Medicine’s Scholarly Achievement Award presented annually to a faculty member who has earned distinction for their research or scholarly work at the Department of Family Medicine.

All faculty members with a full-time or part-time Faculty Department of Family Medicine are eligible. This award can be granted at any point in a career and can be won by an individual on more than one occasion.
Nomination process
Candidates for Scholarly Achievement Award may be nominated by a uOttawa Faculty Member, supervisor, or a colleague and brought forward to the Departmental Advisory Committee (DAC) If no candidates are submitted, the Chair or members of the DAC can nominate.
Each application must include the following elements:
- A letter of nomination (maximum 1 page) describing the candidate’s field and explaining their most important contributions to research.
- Nominee's CV (Optional).

- Quality and impact of publications and/or presentations and/or scholarly contributions in the given year
- Contributions to the field of primary care or health professions education.
- National and/or international reach
- Practical contributions to the academic priorities of the Department of Family Medicine
- Supervision of trainees in research/scholarship work
- Innovation of the research and/or scholarship

Undergraduate Educator of the Year
Description
The Department of Family Medicine’s Undergraduate Educator of the Year Award – presented annually to a member of the teaching staff who has demonstrated outstanding performance in their teaching, in particular in the development of innovative teaching material and methods, courses, and programs of study, and for their interpersonal skills.

- Creativity and impact in UGME pedagogy and/or applications in the development of courses;

Staff Service Excellence Award
Description
This award highlights the key role a staff member plays in enriching the quality of the experience of learners (students and residents), faculty members and the department. It aims to recognize an individual who looks for ways to defy the conventional, to improve service quality, and to provide solutions that meet institutional needs of the department. Such individuals give expression to the University’s vision of service excellence and stand out for the exceptional quality of the service they provide, while adhering to professionalism and fostering an environment of collaboration and teamwork.
Eligibility
All staff of the Department of Family Medicine are eligible, regardless of their job level and category (grant-paid and university staff).
Nomination process

Staff Innovator Award
Description
This award highlights the key role of a staff member who brings forward an innovative idea or approach and recognizes their efforts in improving efficiencies, reducing cost or improving service to learners (students and residents) faculty members and the department.

All staff of the Department of Family Medicine are eligible, regardless of their job level and category (grant-paid and university staff).
Nomination process
All DFM members (faculty, learners and administrative staff) are eligible to nominate staff members for these awards. Staff Behind the Scenes Award
Description
Recognizes staff members who, working behind the scenes, play a key role in the institutional functioning of the department. It aims to recognize an individual who consistently surpasses the requirements of their role to enhance departmental performance and team cohesion in ways that may otherwise go unacknowledged.
Eligibility
All staff of the Department of Family Medicine are eligible, regardless of their job level and category (grant-paid and university staff).
Nomination process
All DFM members (faculty, learners and administrative staff) are eligible to nominate staff members for these awards.
