About Us

The Civic Family Health Team, part of the award-winning Ottawa Hospital Family Health Team, is made up of clinician educators who are committed to helping you develop into a reflective, skilled and patient‐centered family physician. Our staff is organized into three teams, with at least four full-time physicians and two nurses. We usually assign two to three residents to each physician.

We deliver continuous, comprehensive care that focuses on our patients. We also offer:

  • Continuity of care in prenatal and obstetrical care, matching with specific pregnant patients from beginning to end of pregnancy.
  • A fully equipped minor surgical room which is used daily and for our biweekly procedural clinic (all residents get access during your in‐unit rotations).
  • A laboratory with a full‐time technician, an ECG machine, liquid nitrogen and equipment for minor surgical procedures.
  • Two nurse practitioners, six nurses, full‐time dietician, pharmacist, social worker, diabetes team, a psychiatry team practicing shared care, and a monthly dermatology clinic lead by a dermatologist.

We are the sister site to the Riverside Family Health Team, so all allied health workers, after hours clinics, master schedule, FMOB teaching, and call schedules are shared between our sites.

Teaching & Learning Opportunities

Your primary supervisor will supervise you on your ‘half-day back’ during your two year residency. While you are in‐unit, other preceptors will also supervise your work to ensure a well‐rounded experience.

You will have opportunities for informal learning with resident-led EBM rounds, monthly ethics round, and most importantly case discussions and feedback sessions at the end of your clinics. During your FM rotations, every two weeks, you will participate in teaching sessions on office procedures. These are followed by an entire morning of minor skin procedures.

Each week, you will also take part in more formal learning opportunities, with two mornings dedicated to group learning on topics, such as behavioural medicine, obstetrical curriculum, palliative or end-of-life care and other family medicine issues.

Patient Population

Our patient population is diverse. We see newborns, infants, children and adults. We offer full prenatal and obstetrical care and do minor surgical procedures. You will be exposed to a wide variety of clinical problems involving pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, internal medicine, geriatrics, palliative care, psychotherapy and more. We are always looking for ways to make your experience as diverse as possible by introducing new learning opportunities.

In addition to our own patients, we look after six palliative care beds at a nearby hospice.  In your second year you will have a chance to look after these patients for 2 weeks to help develop your palliative care skills.

We also look after two group homes for patients with developmental delay.  This represents a valuable learning opportunity for our residents.
