GENERAL

  • Can you clarify what you mean by research project? And the specific requirements for the research project?

The research project is an intense full-time 8-month in laboratory project exploring an aspect of biomedical science. This project, performed under the supervision of a professor, involves the development of a research question, hypothesis and experimental aims and the execution of experimental procedures, data analysis and interpretation. A research paper and poster presentation are expected at the end of the project.

  • What would be the final product of the research project?

Students must write a research paper and present a scientific poster at the end of the research project.

  • By research paper, do you mean a published paper in a scientific journal?

No, the students are not expected to produce a scientific article that is publishable after only 8 months. However, the research paper submitted for evaluation does follow the standard structure of a scientific article.

  • Is this new program a good option for students that are potentially interested in pursuing a PhD at the University of Ottawa in the future?

Students completing the MSc with research paper are eligible to apply for the PhD Program as research experience is included in the research project option. You must complete the MSc with research project option before applying to the PhD program at the University of Ottawa.

  • Will the masters with research project have the same value on the job market as the masters with thesis?

As always, it depends what your career aspirations are. The MSc with research project offers important research experience that can be useful for careers in government and industry and allows for progression to the PhD programs at the Faculty of Medicine. While the duration of the MSc with research project is not, as long as the thesis-based program, graduates from the MSc with research project will nonetheless be well-versed in research skills.

  • Can people apply directly to the 1-year MSc option? If so, would they be eligible for the entrance scholarship if their GPA upon application is 8.0/10 or higher?

The research project option will not be available to receive applications for admission before September 2020. Students admitted to these programs will not be eligible for the admission scholarship as this scholarship is intended for students admitted to the thesis-based programs.

  • How does the research project differ from the thesis aside from time input requirements?

The format of the written document to be submitted at the end of the project and its evaluation is different. Please see the description of the research project.

  • When saying that it needs two courses from the home program, and two from any graduate program at the Faculty of Medicine - does that include EPI, PBH, and PHR courses?

Yes with special permission.


I AM A NEW CANDIDATE

  • Would someone be able to do a PhD after completing a MSc with research project although it does not have a thesis component?

Yes, upon completion of the MSc with research project option, the candidate could apply to the PhD program, provided they meet the admission requirements.

  • Is the MSc with research project available to students who are not enrolled in a graduate program but have received their BSc and are planning to apply to an MSc program this summer? If yes, how would one proceed?

Admission to the MSc with research project will be available for the fall 2020 term.

In the meantime, to avoid any delays, we recommend candidates apply to the thesis option of the program, enrol to the research project course code and other required courses. Once the program is officially available, you will be transferred in the research project option.

To transfer to the MSc with research option, you will have to complete the Program Modification Form and submit it to grad.med@uottawa.ca.

  • Can people apply directly to the 1-year MSc option? If so, would they be eligible for the entrance scholarship if their GPA upon application is 8.0/10 or higher?

Admission for the MSc with research project option start only in September 2020. Students admitted to the MSc with research paper will not be eligible for the admission scholarship as this scholarship is intended for students admitted to the thesis-based programs.

  • Will the research paper option be applied for the new students starting in fall 2020, or it is only for the currently enrolled MSC students?

This option is available for current student and will be open for admission as of September 2020.

  • I am an undergraduate student considering applying for the MSc with research paper option, will I receive any kind of admission scholarship, as offered with the MSc with thesis option? Will there be no stipend or other financial aid offered, even during the 8-month in-lab research project?

As an undergraduate applying for the MSc, you will not be eligible for an admission scholarship if you choose the MSc with research paper option and no stipend is provided.

  • I have just been accepted into the MSc with thesis. My PI has informed me that  lab work beginning in September cannot be assured due to COVID-19, can I transfer to the MSc with research project for September 2020 and transfer to MSc with thesis in January. This would allow for completion of course work and a stipend for the fall semester. What do I need to do in order to register for this properly?

Yes, you can request a program change by completing the Program Modification Form and submit it through a service request.

  • I am a TMM student and if I want to apply to the masters with a research project next year can I transfer to a master with a thesis. Would I then be eligible for scholarships/stipends?

Transfer from the MSc with research project to the MSc with thesis is permitted if academic standing in the program is good and permission from the research supervisor is obtained. Master with thesis has a stipend.


I AM A CURRENT MSC STUDENT IN THE PROGRAM WITH THESIS OPTION

  • I am a current MSc student in the program with thesis option. If I am switching to the MSc program with research project, will I be able to keep my specialization?

Unfortunately, no. The specializations are not available within these programs.

  • I have completed my coursework and I am just waiting to return to the lab to collect more data for my thesis. Should I continue and wait until I return to the lab or be switching to this program?

The MSc with research paper option has been created to accommodate students who wish to graduate on time and avoid any further delays (financial or academic) due to the COVID-19 situation. It is strongly recommended that you discuss your options with your program director.

  • Do compulsory courses for my current MSc transfer over into the program if I switch?

Yes, the course units obtained during your thesis-based program will be used to complete the research project-based program and transfer over to the new program.

  • If I have already completed 1 year with my current Masters, by when should I finish the 2 courses remaining and the research report?

If you complete your requirements by the end of this term (Spring/Summer 2020) and complete the research paper, you may be eligible to graduate in early fall.

  • After completion of the program requirements, when should I expect to graduate?

Student who are currently completing the program requirements may eligible to graduate in the fall 2020 term.

  • Does the faculty plan to keep this program permanently (available Sept 2020 onwards) or is it only a temporary option for the next year?

The MSc with research paper will remain a component of our program offerings moving forward.

  • Is the 12 months timeline starts after I transfer or when I first began my masters research?

If you intend to transfer from the MSc with thesis option to the research paper option, the clock starts when you first entered the MSc program. As such, provided you have been enrolled for three consecutive terms and have completed the course requirements, you could be eligible to graduate as soon as the research paper is completed.

  • Does the switch from thesis to research project affect the credibility of my work (is one better than the other)?

  • What are home courses?

Home courses refer to courses offered by your home program of study (Eg. CMM, MIC, BCH or NSC). The programs requirements are established according to your current program.

  • Does the MED 8166 Professionalism and Professional Skills class count towards the 12 credits? If so, if I were to switch to this option, as a current 2nd year MSc student, would I need to take an additional course to fulfill the requirements to graduate?

While MED 8166 is also required for the MSc with research paper option, it does not count toward the 12 units of theoretical courses you must complete. Please see the Programs Requirements of your program

  • Does the MSc with research paper require a TAC?

TACs are not required for the MSc with research paper.

How the research project will be graded?

A research paper and poster presentation are expected at the end of the project. For further details, read the research project guidelines.

  • I started in Fall 2019, should not all requirements be filled by August 2020 and I have to take courses or conduct a few months of research in Fall 2020 - will I still receive my admission scholarship and stipend for that additional semester?

Yes, current MSc students who choose to transfer to the MSc with research project due to COVID-19 will continue to receive admission scholarships and stipends.

  • If I started my master’s program in Fall 2019 and begun research immediately would that fill the research requirement, or would additional time still be required? If so, how much?

Each situation is unique. Please discuss with your research supervisor. Provided you can produce a research paper, additional time would not be required.

  • Does a research project have to be defended like a thesis?

No. A written report evaluated by several professors is, however, required.

  • I have submitted my the Program Modification Form through service request, when will I receive a confirmation that my request has been approved?

Your request to switch to the MSc with research project will be processed when the program will become available in the system. We will inform you by email once the transfer is complete.
