FAQ in-person teaching
What health measures (mask wearing, plexiglass panels, etc.) must we follow when teaching?
Mask wearing is required in the classroom. If you do not wear a mask, you must remain behind a plexiglass panel and stay three meters away from others. You can wear a face shield in addition to a mask.
What health measures must students take?
If necessary, you can remind students that they must wear a mask at all times. If a student refuses to put on a mask, you must ask the student to leave the classroom. If the student refuses to leave, call Protection Services. These measures must be followed by everyone at all times, even during seminars and group work. Class schedules account for the time students need to travel from one class to the next. There are also fewer in-person courses this term.
Who will ensure that we do not exceed the maximum classroom capacity (number of people)?
You will receive a list of students enrolled in each class taught in person. If the student’s name is not on the list, you must ask the student to leave the classroom. If they refuse, you can call Protection Services.
On August 31, 2021, the Government of Ontario changed Regulation 364/20 which, as of 7 September 2021, removes physical distancing requirements and classroom capacity limits for indoor teaching areas (classrooms, labs, etc.). However, this change will not have a noticeable effect on the measures already in place at the University.
What cleaning measures are in place?
The virus that causes COVID-19 is transmitted when an infected person emits droplets or aerosol particles in a poorly ventilated and/or crowded space; it is not transmitted by contact with contaminated surfaces. However, we have increased our cleaning frequency to three times a day, which is 50% more than the cleaning frequency in high schools. We have also prepared cleaning kits which faculty members can use if necessary.
What contact tracing measures will be taken if a student starts exhibiting symptoms?
We have implemented a system in cooperation with Ottawa Public Health. Faculty members can still notify the Registrar’s Office or ask students who are exhibiting symptoms to answer the questions in the COVID-19 Assessment Tool.
What changes have been made to ensure proper ventilation in classrooms?
Facilities conducted an extensive analysis of the heating, ventilation, and cooling systems in all classrooms, and has implemented a 10-point plan so that we can comply with, and even exceed, recommendations for air quality and air circulation in learning spaces. Filters will be changed more often, and classroom air quality and air circulation will be monitored throughout the term. In some cases, increased air flow may cause more noise in classrooms. If this is the case, you may need to adjust microphone volumes or contact Facilities.
