This spring, the International and Global Health Office (IGHO) welcomed six specialists from Tongren Hospital in Shanghai for a customized training program at the Faculty of Medicine from May 1st to June 7th, 2019.
The main goal of the training program is to expose Tongren specialist physicians to the referral and consultation process amongst specialists, and between specialty and Family Medicine physicians, as well as the basic concepts of Family Medicine care and best practices in clinical teaching models. To this end, the visitors participated in workshops facilitated by members of the Faculty of Medicine. Some workshop topics included the Canadian healthcare system’s process of referral, the Champlain LIN e-consult system and patient-centred communication methods. Participants gained a better understanding of the Family Medicine Allied Health team case management approach and patient encounters from admission to discharge, with a particular focus on building a strong doctor-patient relationship. The visiting physicians also participated in self-directed learning activities where they had the opportunity to work together on an assigned group project titled: “Collaborative Approach between Primary and Specialty Care on a specific case”, and participated in 2-week clinical observation, where each was matched to a uOttawa Postgraduate Senior Resident or staff in their area of specialty.
The participating physicians were:
- Dr. Yanyang GUO – Paediatric ENT / Dentistry
- Dr. Zhikun LI – Orthopedic Surgery
- Dr. Jialiang WANG – General Surgery
- Dr. Ning WANG – Thoracic Surgery
- Dr. Yuanmei ZHAI – Emergency / Hematology
- Dr. Yi ZHOU – Cardiology
Following an afternoon of group presentations, a reception was held on their last day and attended by representatives from both uOttawa Faculty of Medicine and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Ottawa. The highlight of the event was the presentation of Certificates of Program Completion awarded to each participant.
By all accounts, the 3rd edition of the Tongren Hospital Specialist Observership Program (TSOP) was very successful. Feedback from the Shanghai physicians indicates that they felt their experience at the University of Ottawa was “very useful” and “very informative”;
The IGHO team is grateful to Dr. Monica Brewer (International Fellowship Director, Department of Family Medicine) for her ongoing guidance and expertise in developing the 6-week training program.
This program is expected to continue in the Fall of 2019 and into 2020.
