Graduate Program: Neuroscience

Biography
Year of Entry: 2017
PhD Supervisor: Dr. Jean-Claude Béïque
Personal Background:
Originally from North Bay, Ontario, I moved to Ottawa in 2011 to begin my undergraduate studies in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Ottawa. Following this, I stayed at the University of Ottawa to pursue a Master’s degree in Neuroscience under the supervision of Dr. Jean-Claude Béïque. I joined the MD/PhD program in 2017, and will continue working with Dr. Béïque for my PhD studies in Neuroscience.
Research Focus:
In our laboratory, we are interested in characterizing synaptic connections between neurons in the brain and determining how the properties of these synapses dictate the dynamic behavior of neuronal networks. My work has been principally focused on studying the remodeling of neuronal networks following stroke. In particular, during my Master’s degree I characterized network remodeling in midbrain serotonin circuits in the time course following a cortical stroke, providing a possible mechanism to explain the remarkably elevated rates of major depressive symptoms in stroke survivors.
Scholarship Support:
2015-2016: Canadian Partnership for Stroke Recovery Trainee Award
