Wylam Faught is currently a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ottawa, Deputy Chair and Vice-Chair of Education for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology University of Ottawa/The Ottawa Hospital and Chair of the Royal College Specialty Committee in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Faught graduated from Sir Winston Churchill High School in Calgary, attended the University of Calgary from 1979-1982, and completed a Bachelor of Medical Science in 1984 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1986 from the University of Alberta. After a rotating internship at the Toronto East General Hospital, he spent a year in family practice in Penetanguishene, Ontario.
In 1992 Wylam completed his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Ottawa, followed by a 2 year fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Manitoba. From 1994-2002, Dr. Faught was an attending physician at The Ottawa Hospital and Cancer Centre as well as a faculty member at the University of Ottawa where he was also an Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program Director and Gynecologic Oncology Clinical Trials Coordinator. In 2001 he completed the Educational Scholars Program with the Association of Professors in Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO).
From 2002-2007 he was Professor and Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Alberta, Chief of Women’s Health, Royal Alexandra Hospital, physician lead in the design and functional planning for the Lois Hole Hospital for Women and collaborator with the Department of Pediatrics in the establishment of the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute.
From 2007 to June 2012 he was Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ottawa, Chief of Obstetrics/Gynecology and Newborn Care at The Ottawa Hospital and from 2010-2012, Regional Ob/Gyne Medical Lead for the Champlain Maternal-Newborn Program.
From 2012-2015 Dr. Faught was Medical Director of The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Program, part of a team establishing a culture whereby “each cancer patient was treated as if they were a loved one”.
In April 2012 he graduated from the Certified Physician Executive (CPE) Program with the American College of Physician Executives, in May 2013 completed the Queen’s Advanced Executive Program at Queen’s University School of Business, and in October 2014 completed the Oxford Programme in Negotiation.
Wylam is actively involved in gynecologic oncology clinical care, research and education in Ottawa, surgical and obstetrical skills teaching in Tanzania with the Canadian Network for International Surgery (CNIS) and gynecologic oncology teaching and examination at Moi University in Kenya.
He is Past-President of the Association of Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Canada, a past board member of Ovarian Cancer Canada and the Canadian Foundation for Women’s Health.
In 2010 he was given the “Volunteer of the Year” Award from the Canadian Network for International Surgery, in 2012 Dr. Faught was presented with a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee award and in 2014 was given the Andrée Gruslin Leadership Award from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ottawa.
Wylam, wife Katie, and children Liam, Aidan and Emma, enjoy spending time in the mountains, and at their cottage near Calabogie, Ontario.
