Dr. Fung-Kee-Fung’s Practice in Maternal-Fetal Medicine is largely focused on multiple pregnancies and alloimmune disease. Her weekly MFM clinic is dedicated to the management of complicated multiple gestations; such as monochorionic twins and higher order multiples as well as the diagnosis and prenatal management of alloimmune diseases, i.e. Rh incompatibility; both of which provide an enriched educational experience for our MFM fellows and OB/GYN Residents.
Professor Karen Fung-Kee-Fung’s academic passion lies in the education and support of learners in obstetric and gynecological ultrasound, enabling them to contribute to improving women’s health. As a master’s trained medical educator, her area of interest has been in standard setting and assessment of performance. She has had national educational leadership roles with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as Examination Board Chair for the MFM credentialing exam and served as Chair of the MFM Specialty Committee. As former Program Director for the MFM Fellowship Training Program and Medical Lead of the Ob/Gyne Ultrasound unit at The Ottawa Hospital, she has trained over 70 International Fellows in MFM and Gyne Ultrasound. She has been recognized with several awards for scholarship in medical education.
Academically, she is interested in alloimmune disease of the fetus and is the principle author of national clinical practice guidelines on the Antenatal prevention of Rhesus disease on behalf of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada and BMJ Practice Guidelines for Rh Disease. She has authored practice monographs on Erythroblastosis Fetalis for BMJ-On-Line. For more twenty years she has provided clinical leadership in management of this disease, responsible for performing intrauterine fetal transfusions. She currently provides sonographic imaging support services for perinatology, gynecological oncology and benign gynecology at The Ottawa Hospital. She serves as Chair of VISUOG, the virtual encyclopedia for the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG – internationally acclaimed)
