PGY4 Year
This year may be taken as the first year in a pediatric subspecialty training program. Those currently offered at the University of Ottawa and leading to Royal College pediatric subspecialty certification include cardiology, critical care, development, emergency medicine, endocrinology, hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, neonatal-perinatal medicine, nephrology and neurology.
Opportunities are also available for a broader PGY4 year designed for those anticipating general consulting pediatric practice. There is a good deal of flexibility in the selection of rotations for residents doing a general fourth year. Residents are assigned to a continuity clinic, under the supervision of one of the faculty members in general pediatric medicine. There is a greater focus on teaching skills for these residents as well.
