Biography

Dr. Margaret Lawson completed medical school at McMaster University, her pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario, and her pediatric endocrinology fellowship at the Hospital of Sick Children in Toronto. She also earned a Master’s in clinical epidemiology at McMaster University. Dr. Lawson led the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario’s (CHEO) Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism from 1998 to 2006 as division chief. She then took a one-year sabbatical focusing on shared decision making in pediatrics. Dr. Lawson is a senior scientist in the evidence to practice research program of the CHEO Research Institute and leads the JDRF Canadian Clinical Trial Network (CCTN) clinical centre for Type 1 diabetes research. These studies include the CGM TIME Trial, TRIGR (nutritional prevention of Type 1 diabetes), and Trialnet Pathway to Prevention Study. Dr. Lawson’s clinical interests include the use of technology in Type 1 diabetes (insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring) and as Co-Director of CHEO’s Diversity Clinic providing hormone therapy and support for transgender youth and their families.  She is the Co-Principal Investigator of the CIHR funded Trans Youth Can! - a prospective pan Canadian study assessing health, social and family outcomes amongst transgender youth and their parents.
