Child, Adolescent and Family Psychotherapy
Welcome to our Child, Adolescent Family Psychotherapy Fellowship Program!
Our fellowship program in Child, Adolescent Family Psychotherapy is a 1-year fellowship offered to international medical graduates (IMGs) who have completed or will be completing, their subspecialty training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. IMGs must be fully sponsored by their home country or institution and be proficient in written and oral English.
The training program provides high caliber clinical and didactic training in child, adolescent and family psychotherapy, focusing on dialectical behaviour therapy, parenting skills training and family therapy. Fellows will receive a strong foundation in the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents using these interventions. Graduates of the program will feel confident in independently delivering these psychotherapies to children, youth and their families.
Training Sites
The primary training site is the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), a tertiary care, free-standing children's hospital serving a referral population of over 1,500,000. CHEO will provide high patient volume and clinical diversity on inpatient and outpatient services. The Youth Program at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Care Center will also provide clinical education in psychotherapy and is one of Canada’s foremost specialized mental health centres serving youth ages 16 years and older with complex or persistent severe mental illness.
Eligibility
To be accepted, an applicant must meet the University of Ottawa (uOttawa) Faculty of Medicine Post-Graduate Education Departments’ eligibility criteria. Candidates will be required to demonstrate strong skills in oral and written English and have had some previous training in psychotherapy. Preference will be given to those who have had experience in the North American health care system through observerships or direct care clinical experiences.
