Schizophrenia
Welcome to our Schizophrenia Fellowship Program!
Our Schizophrenia fellowship program is a 1-year fellowship offered to Canadian graduates as well as international medical graduates (IMGs) who have completed or will be completing their specialty training in psychiatry. IMGs must be fully sponsored by their home country or institution and be highly proficient in written and oral English. IMGs have the opportunity to extend the fellowship for an additional year.
The fellowship is offered at the Schizophrenia Recovery Program at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre and consists of clinical, research and teaching components, which can be tailored to meet the specific learning objectives of the fellow. The fellowship provides a dynamic and enriched training opportunity in the field of schizophrenia and related disorders, focusing on assessment and management of complex psychotic disorders. Furthermore, fellows will be supported to prepare for an academic career through ongoing mentorship, involvement in a scholarly project, as well as teaching and leadership opportunities.
Training Sites
The Royal’s Integrated Schizophrenia Recovery Program provides specialized services to adults with schizophrenia spectrum illnesses requiring a tertiary level of care. Currently, there are over 1400 patients enrolled in the outpatient program with a growing number of new assessments. The program also offers inpatient care, day hospital and recovery inpatient stays.
Eligibility
To be accepted, an applicant must meet the eligibility criteria of the University of Ottawa (uOttawa) Faculty of Medicine Post-Graduate Education Department. Canadian graduates must hold a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in psychiatry prior to starting their fellowship and be eligible for an unrestricted license to practice in Ontario. We encourage all eligible PGY4s and PGY5s to apply. IMG candidates will be required to demonstrate strong skills in oral and written English and have a demonstrated interest in psychotic disorders. Preference will be given to those who have had experience in the North American health care system through observerships or direct care clinical experiences. Our program hires on the basis of merit and is committed to equity and diversity.
