The Department of Radiology warmly welcomes the appointment of Dr. Richard Aviv as its new Chair. Dr. Aviv, a neuroradiologist, previously worked in the Department of Medical Imaging at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto for over 15 years. He joined the University of Toronto in 2004, most recently holding the appointment of Full Professor and serving as Associate Vice-Chair of Research–Brain, Spine and Nerve, Medical Imaging. Dr. Aviv has held many administrative, academic, educational and research roles at Sunnybrook Research Institute and Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering.
Dr. Aviv’s research focuses on intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) and ischemic stroke, pioneering the study of ICH expansion and predictive markers. His participation in several studies, including lending design, imaging and data analysis expertise, have led to imaging methods and educational programs geared to detecting, characterizing and predicting hemorrhage as well as the optimization of ICH imaging. His current focus is on novel medical and therapeutic interventions for ICH. Dr. Aviv’s interests in ischemic stroke centre on the application of CT perfusion for patient selection and outcome prediction. He has been honoured with awards for his teaching, patient care and research impact.
After earning his medical degree at the University of Cape Town (South Africa), Dr. Aviv earned an MRCP in Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians (UK), FRCR (Radiology) from the Royal College of Radiologists (UK), FRCPC (Radiology) from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and DABR (Radiology) from the American Board of Radiology (USA). Dr. Aviv completed his fellowship training in Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology at Radcliffe Infirmary (Oxford, UK) and at the University of Toronto.
