As mentors, scientists play a key role as sponsors for their mentees. Yet research has shown that bias can creep into our writing – in ways that can influence the careers of young scientists.
- Review patterns of bias in recommendation letters
- Learn strategies to avoid reproducing bias
- Update one’s templates to help writers mitigate bias
In this ninety-minute workshop, we will ask several volunteers to provide redacted letters (with names removed and gendered pronouns replaced with they/them) in advance and look at what makes those letters seem strong or weak – and then provide strategies to help writers ensure their letters are coming across as intended. We will then divide participants into groups of four to review additional letters and come up with further strategies.
NOTE: Please have a Letter of Recommendation you have used and anonymize it. We will be happy to give you feedback.
