Breast Surgical Oncology Unit
The staff provide care for approximately 800 new breast cancer patients annually through the Women’s Breast Health Centre (WBHC) at the Ottawa Hospital (TOH) Civic Campus The WBHC is a comprehensive regional referral centre that offers expertise in:
- patients with breast cancer
- women at high risk of breast cancer
- patients with other benign breast pathology
The team of staff members, nurses, and others provide specialized consultation and management of patients including:
- breast imaging
- risk assessment
- surgical planning
- psychosocial support
- immediate breast reconstructive procedures
Approximately 80% of surgeries are for malignant disease, and 20% for benign disease. Both Drs. Arnaout and Cordeiro have expertise in oncoplastic breast surgery.
Patients are managed in a rapid assessment and diagnosis program with dedicated nursing support.
The WBHC is the hub of the Champlain LHIN Breast Cancer Community of Practice and hosts weekly multidisciplinary diagnostic/surgical planning rounds. It is closely linked with the TOH Cancer Centre Breast Disease Site Group and the OBSP High Risk Program of screening and genetic assessment.
The staff members are actively involved in the education of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees (residents and fellows) and in continuing professional development for physicians in practice. An Oncoplastic and Research Breast Surgical Oncology fellowship started in July 2017.
