The General Thoracic Surgery Residency Program of The Ottawa Hospital, University of Ottawa, is a two year curriculum (post General Surgery) that is consolidated at the General Campus. One new MOH funded resident is accepted per year. This Program began as a specialty program at the Civic Campus in 1983 and separated from Cardiac Surgery in 1985. Consolidation at the General Campus occurred in 2002 as part of The Ottawa Hospital restructuring process.
The success of this program is due to establishment of multidisciplinary Thoracic Surgery Program, large referral base, clinical research, the Oesophageal Function Laboratory, and emphasis on weekly multidisciplinary thoracic oncology conferences, bi-monthly multidisciplinary thoracic surgery - radiology and pulmonary pathology rounds, weekly thoracic surgery teaching sessions, regular patient audits and regular pneumoclub meetings.
