    • Neurological examination, investigation and management decisions
    • Minor therapeutic procedures performed in ambulatory setting.

Description:

Active participation in acquiring clinical skills by obtaining focused clinical information, conducting neurologic examination and formulating investigation and management strategies in a supervised clinic/office setting of patients referred for neurosurgical attention. Out-patient clinics are conducted weekly at fixed times for the purpose of evaluating patients referred for neurosurgical consultation and for follow-up of previously treated neurosurgical patients.

Clinical Neurosurgery

Objectives:

  • Refinement of neurological examination, investigation and management decisions;
  • Firsthand exposure to neurosurgical emergencies, the spectrum of neurosurgical disorders in an ambulatory population, and a spectrum of elective and semi-elective neurosurgical disorders in hospital;
  • Exposure to neurosurgical diagnostic and neurosurgical procedures.

Description:

Two-week elective blocks are available to expose students to a broad spectrum of emergencies, elective operative neurosurgery and ambulatory neurosurgery in the ambulatory clinics of the Ottawa General Hospital and Ottawa Civic Hospitals. Students will participate in clinical activities with the neurosurgical residents under supervision, including consultations, non-operative clinical care, diagnostic procedures and surgical interventions. This will provide first-hand opportunity to correlate clinical diagnoses and diagnostic tests with operative pathology. The elective will incorporate a significant exposure to trauma to the nervous system, cerebrovascular disease, neuro-oncology and disorders of the spine.

Students with a special interest in neurosurgery may consider completing more than one two-week block.

Location: The Ottawa Hospital, Civic Campus
