Ambulatory Thoracic Surgery

This elective is offered to medical students, attending ambulatory clinics (4 per week) and participating in the operating room (4 days).

Location: The Ottawa Hospital, General Campus

Duration: Up to 8 hours per day

Elective in Clinical Thoracic Surgery

Objectives:

  • Understand swallowing disorders and use of esophageal function laboratory;
  • Participate in the multidisciplinary approach to treatment of thoracic malignancies;
  • Understand clinical presentation, staging and treatment of lung cancer;
  • Learn anatomy of the thorax in the operating room;
  • Attend ambulatory clinics in Thoracic Surgery;
  • Participate in the postoperative care of patients.

Information:

  • Ambulatory Clinic on 6NW starting at 0900 hrs Monday, 0800 hrs Tuesday, 0900 hrs Wednesday, 0800 hrs Thursday.
  • Ward rounds begin at 0630 hrs in the Observation Unit on 6NW.
  • Thoracic Operating Room everyday starting at 0800 hrs Monday and Tuesday, 0830 hrs Wednesday, 0800 hrs Thursday.
  • Teaching round Monday at 1700 hrs on 6NW Conference Room.
  • Teaching round Wednesday morning at 0730 hrs on 6NW Conference Room, subject to change for Grand Rounds and location.
  • Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Round at the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre, General Campus at 0800 hrs.
  • Bi-monthly Multidisciplinary Clinical-Pathology-Radiology Thoracic Rounds in the X-ray Department classroom.
