The Medicine and the Humanities program (MHP) in the undergraduate medical education curriculum at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, is a new and evolving program. It seeks to enhance our students’ education by formally infusing both curricula of our French and English streams with concepts of health, medicine and healing through medical history, philosophy, the arts and literature. Indeed, “Since humans have been able, we have used philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language to understand and record our world. These modes of expression have become some of the subjects that traditionally fall under the humanities umbrella”.
The program consists of mandatory curricular components that all students will receive, and extracurricular or elective components for students who wish to pursue the arts and humanities in more detail. Students with special interests in this area will be able to earn special recognition for their interest in, and commitment to, the humanities in medicine as well as a Certificate of Excellence in Medicine and the Humanities if they fulfill all requirements.
